The Great Tooth Eruption: A Journey Through Your Smile’s Milestones

Think of your smile as having a lifetime of amazing adventures, full of exciting new arrivals and even a few fond farewells! From those very first baby teeth to the final set of grown-up grinders, your mouth goes on an incredible journey.

So, let’s take a fun-filled tour through the major milestones of your smile, complete with a timeline to help you keep track!

Before you know it, a tiny, pearly white point will peek through your gums—the very first sign of your smile’s incredible journey!

These “baby teeth,” also known as primary or deciduous teeth, typically start to show up around 6 months of age, with a full set of 20 usually in place by the time a child is 2 to 3 years old.

They might be small, but they have a very important job like helping your little one chew, speak and save space for the permanent teeth waiting below.

It’s the grand opening of your smile’s first chapter!

Did You Know? A baby is born with all 20 of their primary teeth already formed and hiding just below their gums, waiting for their big debut!

When they start making an appearance it’s important to start brushing them, but be sure to use a toothpaste specifically designed for children.

This is important as it contains the right amount of fluoride for their little smiles, keeping them safe and healthy.

Ah, the wobbly tooth! We’ve all had one!

It’s a rite of passage for every child and a signal that a big change is coming. This is the moment your baby teeth start to loosen, making way for the permanent ones.

This process typically begins around age 6 and continues until about age 12. Beneath the surface, the permanent tooth is gently pushing the baby tooth’s root and this in turn is dissolving away until it gets wobbly enough to fall out.

So, while it might feel a little strange, remember that it’s all part of a clever plan by your body to make room for your new, stronger teeth.

This is, of course, is the Tooth Fairy’s busiest season! She’s always on standby for those tiny treasures and a quick, magical exchange.

Fun Fact:   The first permanent molar to erupt is often called the “6-year molar” because it typically comes in around that age, right behind your last baby tooth!

After a tooth or two falls out, the new crew arrives!

Your permanent teeth are bigger, stronger, and built to last a lifetime. The first of these, the permanent molars, often erupt around ages 6 or 7, behind the baby teeth.

The rest follow a general schedule, with most permanent teeth in place by the time you’re around 13-16.  They make up a total of 28 without wisdom teeth and 32 with wisdom teeth. They are broken down to sets of 8 incisors, 4 canines, 8 premolars and 8 molars excluding wisdom teeth or 12 molars including wisdom teeth.

All these groups of teeth each have a special job to do. The sharp front incisors designed for cutting through food, the side pointy canines and premolars for tearing through tougher bits of food and the strong, flat molars in the back for grinding and breaking down the food, the premolars also get involved in this part as well.

They’re the ultimate team for chewing, speaking, and smiling.

Taking care of this permanent crew is super important. They’re with you for the long haul, so regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are key to keeping them strong and healthy.

Did you know:  Sometimes some teeth are missing naturally as they never formed, this is called hypodontia – no need to panic this does happen, it’s best to check in with your dental professional and they will advise you.

Just when you thought your smile’s journey was complete, the last set of molars—the wisdom teeth—might make an appearance.

They typically arrive in your late teens or early twenties, usually between ages 17 and 25, and they’ve earned their name because they show up at a “wiser” age.

For some, wisdom teeth emerge without any trouble and become a useful part of their chewing team. For others, there might not be enough room for them to come in properly, which can sometimes cause discomfort. For some they don’t make an appearance at all, sometimes they were never there.

Your dentist will be your best friend during this time, keeping a close eye on their progress and helping you decide if they need to be removed.

Let’s clear up some misunderstandings about these amazing smile milestones!

Myth 1: “You don’t need to brush baby teeth because they’ll just fall out anyway.”

  • Fact: Oh no! This is a big one. Baby teeth are incredibly important! They hold the essential space for permanent teeth, help with proper speech development, and allow children to chew food correctly. Neglecting them can lead to pain, infection, and even problems for the permanent teeth developing underneath. So, brush those tiny teeth twice a day!

Myth 2: “If you pull a wobbly tooth yourself, the permanent tooth will come in crooked.”

  • Fact: Relax, parents! If a baby tooth is truly ready to come out, gently wiggling it (or letting it fall out naturally) won’t impact how the permanent tooth comes in. The permanent tooth’s alignment is mostly determined by genetics and the space available in the jaw, not how the baby tooth was removed. However, never force a tooth out before it’s ready!

Myth 3: “Wisdom teeth always need to be removed.”

  • Fact: Not always! While many people do need their wisdom teeth removed due to lack of space, impaction, or other issues, some fortunate individuals have enough room for them to erupt properly and function just fine. Your dentist will monitor their development and let you know if removal is necessary for your specific smile.
